A Man-Hunt For Vietnam War Draft Evaders

The Association. [Assignment For The Writer's Club. June 10th 2002.]

A short-sleeved cotton dress with ocean waves, sailboats and palm trees on a blue background, is imprinted on my mind since I was a very young child. The dress was worn by my mother sometime in the nineteen fifties. Half a century later I still remember the detail and the happy times associated with that summer dress.

Since my beloved mother's passing last November, I have been on a quest to find a dress in the same print. Cruising to the Western Caribbean Islands of Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico, I found a variety of island prints but none that matched the one in my memory. On our last port of call in Key West, a store assistant informed me that there is a revival of old prints marketed under the label 'Paradise Found' and she directed me to a store a few blocks away on Duval Street, where she thought I might find my 'treasure'. But once again, the colorful prints did not match the one in my mind's eye.

Perhaps it is a mirage that cannot be duplicated, but the good feeling associated with the image of my mother wearing that flowing full-skirted 'boat dress' one warm summer long, long ago, will stay with me forever.
